My 12 year old rain barrel split at the seam last Tuesday and I'm glad it did
I filled it during that storm last Tuesday and around 9pm I heard a crack, then water pouring down the side of the garage in Indianapolis. I used to think rain barrels were pointless since my water bill is like $22 a month anyway, but standing in a puddle in my slippers at midnight made me rethink it. I yanked the thing off the downspout and swapped in a $9 diverter kit and a 55 gallon drum from a car wash guy, and now I'm catching 300+ gallons off my roof every big storm. It's not about the money, it's that I can water the tomatoes for two weeks without touching the hose. Anyone got a setup that beats a plain drum with a diverter? Mine still overflows into the neighbor's yard when it's full and I'd like to fix that.
Guessing the barrel heard your water bill was only $22 and decided to retire early. Maybe just run a hose from the overflow to a soaker bed so the extra water feeds your plants instead of the neighbor's lawn.
