I used to think my old car was fine until I saw the real cost

For years I drove a 2008 SUV, telling myself it was cheaper than a new car. Then my friend showed me a site that tracks yearly fuel and repair costs. Mine was over $3,200 a year, not counting the oil it burned. I compared that to a newer hybrid, and the numbers flipped my thinking completely. The old gas guzzler was actually costing me more in the long run. Has anyone else done this math and been shocked by the result?

See, I never trust those online calculators. They always assume worst case repair costs. My old truck is cheap to fix myself.

Totally get that, I ran the numbers on my old beater and had the same shock. @corawilliams yeah, burning oil is a huge red flag people miss.

Wait, it was burning oil on top of that? That's wild.
