I used to roll my eyes at people talking about composting until I tried it in my own backyard

For years I thought composting was just for granola types with too much time on their hands, especially living in a small rental in Portland. But last spring I finally set up a cheap bin from the hardware store, just tossed in veggie scraps and leaves. After 6 months the soil I got back was way darker and richer than anything I've seen in a bag. Am I wrong for thinking this actually makes a difference, or is composting just another trend that won't scale?

My buddy Kyle in Seattle swore by his tiny balcony compost setup for like two years before I believed him. He'd bring me these jars of black gold from eggshells and coffee grounds while I was still buying miracle-gro. One time he grew these absurdly fat cherry tomatoes that tasted like candy and proved his point better than any stat could. It ain't gonna fix the whole world but for his little patch of dirt it made a real dent.

His "black gold" phrase always makes me laugh cause my buddy Ryan called his compost pile "wizard dirt" and swore it made his peppers glow.
