Hit 1,000 miles on my bike commute this year and it snuck up on me
I logged my 1,000th mile riding to work on Tuesday and I honestly did not see it coming. I started tracking back in March after a guy at the bike shop in Fort Collins told me most people quit commuting by June, so I just wanted to prove him wrong. My ride is only 4.5 miles each way, nothing crazy, but stringing those short trips together added up faster than I expected. What got me was thinking about how I used to drive that same route and not think twice about it. Ten years ago I would have laughed if you told me I'd do this in winter with studded tires and a cheap balaclava. The math helps too, since I figure I've skipped around 40 gallons of gas so far. Anyone else keep a log like this, and did your number surprise you when you finally checked it?
