Heard a contractor say solar panels on old roofs are a trap, then I looked into it
I was at a hardware store in Tacoma last Saturday and overheard two roofers talking. One said he refuses to install solar on any roof older than 15 years because the panel lifespan outlasts the shingles and then you pay double to reroof around them. That stuck with me. I went home and checked my own roof, it's 17 years old and I was actually pricing out a small 4 panel setup for my shed. Now I'm thinking I should get a roof inspection first, maybe even replace the shingles before I commit. Has anyone else run into this timing issue? How do you plan for panels when your roof is already mid-life?
