Found out my dishwasher has a pre-rinse cycle that saves hot water
I was reading the manual for my 5 year old Bosch last week and found a setting I never knew about. Its a pre-rinse cycle that uses cold water instead of me running the faucet hot for 3 minutes before loading. I tried it on a load with dried egg and oatmeal and everything came clean. Now I save maybe 8 gallons of hot water per load and my water heater runs less. Has anyone else found hidden settings on their appliances that help save energy?

My buddy Rick found out his Samsung washer had a "soak and steam" option he never touched. He had been hand scrubbing his kid's grass stains out of jeans for years before loading them. One day he accidentally hit the wrong button and it ran a two hour cycle with that setting. Everything came out spotless, even the stuff he usually pretreats. Now he just tosses everything in and lets the machine do the work. Saves him like 20 minutes of scrubbing per load.

That pre-rinse cycle on Bosch dishwashers actually uses cold water, not hot. Running the faucet hot before loading is what wastes energy.
