My recycling bin sat empty for 2 years until I saw the city's new sorting chart

I live near Edgewater Park and always tossed my recyclables in without rinsing anything. Last Tuesday I grabbed the new flyer the city mailed out and realized I had been putting greasy pizza boxes and unrinsed peanut butter jars in the bin the whole time. That stuff contaminates the whole load, and a neighbor told me the city sent whole truckloads to the landfill because of it. I spent an hour that night setting up a rinse station in my sink and now I actually check the little triangle numbers on containers. The 2 year habit felt normal but it was totally wrong for the West Side pickup system. Anyone else find out they were recycling wrong after reading that flyer, or did everyone already know?
