My dishwasher flooded the kitchen after a cheap seal gave out

Woke up last Saturday to water all over the linoleum near the sink. Turns out the rubber gasket on my 5 year old Whirlpool cracked and let everything drain out onto the floor. Spent $45 on a new seal from the parts shop on Lorain Ave and had to mop up for an hour. Anyone else had luck with those universal gaskets or should I just buy the exact OEM part next time?

That seal probably lasted just long enough for you to forget about it, which is how most cheap parts work - they wait until you're not looking to ruin your weekend.

Heard a mechanic say cheap rubber seals basically get brittle way faster because they skip the curing process properly.

and i read somewhere that a lot of cheap seals are made from recycled rubber, which just doesn't hold up over time. my buddy had the same thing happen with a timing cover gasket, car leaked oil a week after he put it in. its like the damn thing waits for the worst possible moment, right when you think everything is fine.
