My 5 gallon wax experiment on W 117th went sideways fast

I tried melting down old candle stubs from the thrift store into new blocks for my garage, and the whole batch started smoking after 20 minutes on the stove. Turns out those random candles had different melting points and some metal wick bases that I didn't strain out, so now my garage smells like burnt plastic and old perfume. Has anyone else tried DIY candle recycling on the west side and ended up with a worse mess than you started with?
