Stopped by a chimney in Savannah that had 3 feet of creosote buildup

I was down in Savannah last week for a family thing and got a look at a 1920s brick chimney that hadn't been swept in maybe 15 years. The creosote was so thick you could chip chunks off with your fingers, looked like black honeycomb. The homeowner said they only burn seasoned wood and never had a smell, which is exactly what people tell me before a fire. I spent an hour scraping out a small section just to show them what was sitting in there, and they still seemed hesitant about booking a full clean. Has anyone else run into that kind of denial where the buildup is obvious but the homeowner just shrugs it off?
