Rant: Old timer told me to skip the vacuum and just wire brush the flue

Called me lazy for dragging my HEPA vac up 3 flights of stairs, so I tried his way on a job last Tuesday - ended up with soot all over the customer's white sofa and had to pay $200 for cleaning. Has anyone else gotten burned by that old-school "just brush it down" advice?

Screwed yourself with that old head advice lol. Always trust the HEPA vac over some boomer hack.

You ever try cleaning a shop vac filter with a leaf blower? I did that once and blew dust EVERYWHERE, ended up with a fine layer of grime over my whole garage. Anyway, I used to swear by the old brush method too until I borrowed my buddy's HEPA vac for a weekend project. It sucked up stuff I didn't even know was there, like fine sawdust I'd been walking on for months. So yeah, I'm with the HEPA crowd now, but I still keep a stiff brush in the truck for weird crevices.
