PSA: Had a close call with a hidden wasp nest in a chimney near Springfield

I was cleaning a brick chimney on an old farmhouse outside of Springfield. I dropped the brush down and heard a weird buzzing sound instead of the usual scrape. Pulled it back up and a whole nest of wasps came swarming out of the flue tile. I had to back off fast and wait an hour with a can of spray before I could finish the job. Anyone else run into pests hiding in places they really shouldn't be?

Wait, you just dropped the brush down without looking first? That takes some serious guts, man. I would have been poking around with a camera or something for an hour. The thought of a whole SWARM just boiling out of a dark hole like that is a full-on nightmare.

My buddy did that with a hollow fence post once... a whole nest of wasps came pouring out like angry soda. He ran so fast he left his shoes in the yard. Some things you just don't need to see coming.

My dad had a similar thing happen with an old mailbox once. He was trying to fix the hinge and just yanked the whole door off without peeking inside first. A family of field mice came flying out like they were personally offended by the home improvement project. He screamed like a little kid and threw the door into the bushes. Mom still brings it up at every cookout like it's the funniest thing she's ever seen. Point is, sometimes you just gotta accept that some holes are better left unopened.
