One bad review said my chimney caps were wrong. Turned out they were right.

Back in March a homeowner in York, PA told me my cap installs looked sloppy because I was using the wrong size for the flue. I brushed it off, but then I measured three jobs I did last year and two of them were undersized. I switched to measuring the liner before ordering and it cost me a little extra time but saved me a callback. Has anyone else had a picky customer point out something that actually made you better?

But honestly, maybe that customer just got lucky and you're overthinking this. Measuring every liner adds time to every job, and the real fix is just having a better eye for it on site, not turning every install into a science project. I've seen guys obsess over specs and still screw up the actual fit, so the review probably didn't mean anything.

Man, my "better eye" is basically a blindfold at this point. I've eyeballed liners that looked perfect on site then came back the next day looking like a crumpled napkin. So yeah, I'll keep measuring stuff and looking like a science project if it means my customers don't have to call me back crying.
