Just realized I almost lit a customer's house up by trusting a 20 year old cleanout cap
Was on a job in Rochester last month and the cap on the cleanout looked fine so I popped it and a wall of soot and old creosote crumbs came down right onto the furnace intake. I shut everything down, ran the shop vac for 40 minutes, and told the homeowner straight up what happened before they could smell it. Now I crack every cap slow with a rag over it and a bucket under it, no exceptions. Anyone else got a close call where the easy part almost wrecked the whole job?
I had a similar thing happen with an old gas valve on a water heater, tested fine for a second then started leaking the moment I put a wrench on it. Learned right there to never trust a part just because it looks okay on the outside, cause they all look fine til they dont. Now I treat every old fitting like it's ready to blow and keep a towel and bucket within reach.
