I always oiled my brushes after every job, then a 30 year sweep in Akron asked me why
For 4 years I scrubbed every brush with kerosene and oiled them after each job because that is how the old guy who trained me did it. Last Friday a sweep named Dale in Akron watched me do it and asked if I liked buying new brushes every 8 months. He said the oil traps soot in the base of the bristles and actually wears the spine out faster, and that just a dry brush-out with a stiff wire comb is enough. I checked the 3 brushes I retired this year and every one of them was soft and floppy right where the bristles meet the stock. So what are you all actually doing to keep brushes alive, or am I the only one who was oiling them like a fool?
