Had to choose between a poly brush and a hand wire brush for a heavy creosote job last Tuesday

I was up on a roof outside of Portland staring at a flue packed with stage 3 glaze, and my normal poly brush was just sliding over it like nothing. Grabbed the wire brush from the truck instead and spent an extra hour scraping, but at least the liner didn't crack. Anybody have a go-to for thick glaze that doesn't beat up your arms?

Yeah but were you using a poly brush with the stiff black bristles or the softer white ones? I've found the cheap white poly brushes might as well be a feather duster on stage 3 glaze, while the black ones actually dig in a little. Did you get more dust than chips with the wire brush, or did it actually break the glaze loose?

I actually watched a video from That Glaze Guy last week where he tested like 12 different brushes on stage 3 glaze. He found the black poly bristles worked way better because they're a little stiffer and actually scrape the surface instead of just sliding over it. The white ones he said were basically useless for anything past stage 2. For the wire brush thing, he got mostly dust until he switched to a brass wire brush which actually started pulling up small chips. So I think it depends on the metal too. Just what I remember from that video anyway.
