Guy who's been sweeping 30 years told me to quit brushing my flue with nylon, and now I'm second-guessing everything
Ran into Ray at the supply house in Albany last Tuesday and he asked what I was using for flue brushing on these old brick chimneys. When I said nylon, he just shook his head and said "you're polishing the glaze, not cutting the creosote" and walked off. I've been doing it that way for 6 years, but he's got a point about the hard glazed stuff on the third-degree creosote I keep running into. Now I'm wondering if I've been leaving buildup behind on half my jobs and calling it clean. Any of you switched from nylon to poly or wire for the glazed stuff, and did it actually make a difference on the tough jobs?
30 years is a long time to be sweeping but that doesn't mean his one-liner is gospel. Nylon vs poly on glazed creosote, sure maybe it matters a little, but half your jobs being "not clean" sounds like a stretch. Did the guy actually show you a chimney he re-cleaned, or was it just a salty comment at the supply house?
