Drove 90 minutes to a job with my brush head backwards

I spent 10 years spinning my rods the same direction until a customer leaned over and asked why I was pushing soot deeper into his flue instead of pulling it out. Who else had a basic technique click way later than it should have?

Right?! Took me way too long to figure out I was fighting the brush instead of working with it.

The first time I realized my mistake was on a two-story chimney in Greenfield. I had already pushed a good three feet of soot back into the flue before the homeowner came out and mentioned how strange it looked. Made me feel like a total idiot, especially since I'd been doing this for four years by then. But honestly, that's the kind of stuff you don't unlearn once you see it right. Now I always check my brush head before I even start cranking on the rods.
