The $14 pork belly at that new spot on Delmar made me rethink the whole small plates trend
Went to a place on Delmar in St. Louis last Friday and ordered their pork belly small plate for $14. It was maybe four bites, cooked fine, but I sat there thinking this is what everyone is raving about? I've been cooking 12 years and I can put out a full family style plate of braised belly for what they charged for a garnish. I get the margins and the vibe, but we keep telling young cooks that tiny plates equal talent and I'm not buying it. What's the most overpriced small plate you've seen lately, and did it at least taste good?
Cooking for 12 years and watching someone charge $14 for a garnish has to sting a little. Four bites of pork belly for the price of a whole slab is bold. Guess the vibe comes free with the plate. At least it was cooked right, small wins.
