Rant: That expensive Japanese knife I bought was a total waste

I dropped $180 on a Shun chef's knife at a kitchen supply store in Chicago about 6 months ago. Within the first week the tip chipped off just from slicing bell peppers. For that kind of money I expected way better quality. Has anyone else had bad luck with premium knives or did I just pick the wrong brand?

Bought a Kramer by Zwilling chef's knife a few years back and the first time I used it on a sweet potato the whole handle started wobbling after like two cuts. I was so mad I almost threw it out the window. Turned out the epoxy they used to seal the handle just gave up, and I had to fix it myself with some wood glue and clamps. For something that costs over $200 you'd think they'd test that stuff before sending it out. My $40 Victorinox has never let me down, and I use it for everything now. High end knives are just overrated status symbols half the time.

One bad knife doesn't mean the whole high-end thing is a scam, does it?
