Watched a porch post sink 2 inches into wet ground in Scranton, so I finally stopped skipping the footing
Helped my cousin shore up the front porch on his 1912 foursquare in Scranton a few weeks ago and figured I'd just pour a quick pad like always. Two hours after we set the post, the ground turned to soup from all the rain and the whole thing sank about 2 inches off level. I was mad at first, then realized I've been cutting that corner on every little job, so we dug out 3 feet and poured a real footing with a gravel base. Cost me $60 in concrete and an extra afternoon, and honestly I don't think I'll ever skip it again. Has anyone else had a post pull a disappearing act on them, and did you just re-pour or try to save the old one?
Had the same thing happen on a shed build and I just dug out the old post, packed gravel, and poured fresh concrete around a new one. Saving the sunk post wasn't worth it since the bottom was already sitting in muck.
