I called the $2,800 quote for a new roof on my 1920 bungalow in Portsmouth a scam, then I got up there myself
Three roofers all said the same thing, the decking under the back slope was rotted from a bad flashing job in the 80s, and when I finally pulled the shingles off last Saturday I found 14 feet of soft wood exactly where they said it would be, so now I have to ask, how do you know when a contractor is telling you the truth versus padding the bill?
Roofers who let you climb up and see the rot yourself before you commit are usually the honest ones. The ones padding the bill won't want you looking at anything. I always ask them to take pics of the bad spots, and if they get weird about it, that tells me plenty.
