Am I the only one who checks the basement floor drain before making an offer?
I looked at a 1911 foursquare in Hamilton last month, listed at $39,900, and the basement had a fresh coat of drylock on every wall. That paint is a red flag, not a selling point, since it traps water and hides the tide marks from old flooding. I pulled up the listing photos from two years ago and you could see a water line about 14 inches up the block wall that nobody bothered to cover. So now I always ask for old photos and check the floor drain for staining before I even think about an offer. Has anyone else been burned by a freshly painted basement, or am I being too careful here?
