Warning: I picked the 99 cent store spaghetti sauce over the $4 name brand
Last week I was staring at the shelf at my local Market Basket in Boston. On one side was the store brand sauce for 99 cents. On the other was Rao's for like $8. I went with the cheap one cause my budget is TIGHT right now. It was honestly fine. A little watery but I added some garlic powder and a pinch of sugar and it tasted just as good as the expensive stuff. My roommate couldnt even tell the difference when I served it. Has anyone else tried this or am I just too broke to know good sauce?

Oh man, I gotta disagree hard here. The cheap stuff is usually watery and bland, and no amount of garlic powder is gonna fix that - you deserve better than pretending it's the same.

I used to be a lot like jana_ellis95. I grew up with my mom always buying Ragú and I thought that was just how spaghetti sauce was supposed to taste. But a few years ago money got really tight for me too, and I started buying the Wal-Mart brand for 98 cents a jar. I was surprised at how much a little extra garlic powder and dried basil could do. My kids ate it up without a single complaint, and honestly it saved me about 4 dollars that week. So I get where you are coming from, and I think there is something to be said for being creative with the cheap stuff. Good seasoning really does make up for a lot.
