Two weeks of pressed tofu and my grocery bill finally dropped
I started pressing my own tofu instead of buying the fancy pre-pressed packs, which here in Austin run about $3.50 for half the amount. After 2 weeks, my protein spending went from around $40 a week down to $23, and the texture is way better for stir fries. It's just a matter of wrapping it in a towel and putting a cast iron pan on top for 20 minutes while I chop veggies. Has anyone else tried pressing their own, or do you stick with the regular blocks?
Tried it once and never went back to the wet blocks. The towel and cast iron trick works but I got tired of dirtying towels so I switched to paper towels and a cutting board with my heaviest pot on top. Twenty minutes is about right, any longer and the edges get kind of tough. The price thing is real too, those pre pressed packs are a total rip off for what you get. One tip if you keep at it, freeze the pressed blocks if you buy a bunch at once, the texture gets even chewier after it thaws.
