PSA: I used to think bulk spices were a ripoff until I did the math last month
I always bought those little jars at the grocery store for $4 each and figured buying a bag for $8 was just wasteful. Then I saw a bag of cumin at the Mexican market for $3.50 and it was literally 10 times the size of my jar. I compared the weight and realized I was paying like 5 times more for the same amount. Now I buy everything in bulk and just refill old jars. Anyone else find a surprising money saver like this?

Oh that "literally 10 times the size" thing really hits home, I had the exact same wakeup call with oregano of all things. I just assumed the big bag would cost more overall but when I actually checked the unit price my jaw dropped. It's wild how a little math can change your whole shopping game for the better.

Three years for paprika? That's wild to me. I feel like spices lose their kick way before that, but I guess if you're not using it daily it makes sense. Still though, buying in bulk for something that lasts that long feels risky if you end up not liking it as much later. But I guess if the price is right, it's worth the gamble.

My friend Sarah bought bulk paprika once and it lasted her three whole years somehow.
