My usual grocery store had 3lb bags of onions for $1.99 but they were all soft last week

I normally just grab the cheapest onions without a second look, but my neighbor at the checkout said 'those are going bad in 2 days' so I switched to the loose ones instead. Saved me from tossing half a bag and now I check for firmness every time. Anyone else have a quick produce tip that keeps your meals from going to waste?

Three bucks for loose onions is a waste when you can just cook the soft ones same day.

Yeah, but three bucks isn't bad if you only need one.
