My rice cooker broke right before dinner and I had to improvise
I was at home last Tuesday, about to make a big batch of beans and rice, when my cheap rice cooker just stopped heating. I had already soaked the beans overnight. I ended up boiling the rice in a regular pot with extra water, then drained it like pasta. It worked fine and saved the meal. Has anyone else had a kitchen gadget die and found a cheaper way to do the same thing?

That's a solid save, and @ramirez.blair's mixer trick is smart too.

Wait, did your hand mixer survive the paint or did it kick it too? I've been there with blender burnout and it's a bummer when you're right in the middle of things. It's good that a cheap hand mixer got you through it though, those things are tough as nails sometimes. I remember one time my old blender just gave up mid-batch and I had to finish stirring by hand. Ended up with a sore arm but the paint still came out smooth somehow. Hope your mixer is still going strong after that.
