I finally asked the lady at the grocery store about her budget trick

I saw her at Aldi last month buying a whole cart of food for under $40, so I asked how she did it. She told me she only buys things on the outer walls of the store and never touches the middle aisles. Has anyone else tried that and made it work for dinner variety?

That outer wall tip sounds smart, I actually heard a doctor on a podcast talking about how most processed stuff lives in the middle aisles. He said the real nutrition is around the edges - produce, dairy, meat, and bread. Seems like you'd get stuck with pretty boring dinners but I bet you can still mix it up with different veggies and proteins if you get creative.

Well honestly I used to be one of those people who just grabbed whatever looked good from the middle aisles and called it a day. I always figured the outer edge stuff was too expensive or took too much time to cook but @terrywilson you got me rethinking that whole mindset after hearing that doctor explain it. It makes total sense when you think about it, why would fresh ingredients be in the middle when they need to be kept cold and rotated fast? You're right about boring dinners too, at first I thought salads and plain chicken every night sounded awful but then I found out about stir fries and sheet pan meals. Seriously you can throw broccoli and bell peppers and some cheap cuts of meat on a pan with olive oil and seasonings and it's totally different every time. I'm definitely gonna try sticking to the outer walls next grocery trip and see if my wallet and my health both win.
