Hot take: dried beans vs canned beans changed my grocery bill from $60 to $38 in 3 months
Three months ago I started buying dried beans instead of canned. I live in Austin and my weekly food bill for two was around $60. Now it is $38. That is a $22 drop every single trip. The first time I cooked a bag of pinto beans I soaked them overnight, boiled them for an hour, and they turned out way better than the mushy stuff in the can. A one pound bag costs $1.49 and makes about six cans worth. But here is where I get stuck. Some folks say the time you spend soaking and cooking is worth more than the savings. A friend said she would rather pay extra and save two hours on a Sunday. I get that. But I also think we sometimes forget that beans on the stove do not need us standing there. Has anyone else switched to dried and felt it was worth the extra planning? Or did you go back to cans because the time cost was too high?
You don't need to soak pintos overnight, an hour in the pot does the job fine. And like you said, they cook while you do other stuff, so the time thing is mostly a myth.
