Can we talk about the sandwich markups at pretentious cafe chains
I used to get lunch at this place called Toast & Co. in downtown Portland, paying $12 for a basic turkey sandwich. Then I saw them prepping the ingredients last month. They were using the same bagged bread and deli meat I buy at WinCo for $4 a loaf. I walked out mid-order and now I just bring my own sandwich from home. Has anyone else gotten sticker shock watching a cafe assemble your lunch in front of you?

Can't believe they're charging $12 for what amounts to a grocery store sandwich.

My brother paid $13 for a turkey club at a place downtown last week and it came on bread that was literally stale. I mean you could hear the crunch when he bit into it. The thing about these places is they think if they put it on a wooden board with a pickle spear it justifies the price. But a sandwich is a sandwich at the end of the day and $12 is basically a whole grocery store loaf of bread and a pound of meat. I'd rather just make it at home with some decent ingredients and save the money for something else.

Reminds me of paying for ambiance not ingredients.
