My HVAC died on the hottest day of July
The compressor on my AC unit finally gave out last Tuesday with the temp at 97 in Phoenix. I had to use my cash out refi money to cover the $4,700 replacement cost since I didn't have that kind of cash just sitting around. The whole thing felt like a huge setback, but at least I can sleep without sweating through the sheets now. Anyone else have an emergency pop up right after you closed on your refi?

Man, same thing happened to me. Closed on my refi in June, and two weeks later my water heater burst in the garage. Flooded everything. Had to use almost all the cash out money for the replacement and cleanup. $3,800 gone just like that. Felt like I was taking two steps back after finally getting ahead.

Yeah @blair626, "two steps back after finally getting ahead" really hit home for me. I started keeping a separate emergency fund after my HVAC died three months after my refi, just stashing a couple hundred bucks each month into a high yield savings. I know it's tough to save when you're already stretched thin, but having that cushion has saved my butt twice since then.
