Tried using a knee kicker on some really old carpet in a 1920s house near Detroit last week
The carpet kept rippling no matter how much I stretched it. After an hour of fighting it, I tried wetting the backing foam a little with a spray bottle before kicking, and it flattened out like new. Anyone else run into old carpet that just refuses to cooperate without some moisture trick?

Wetting the foam a bit is exactly what I did with some stubborn 1930s carpet in a Chicago bungalow. Worked like a charm after that.
