That advice about power stretcher pins was dead wrong

My old foreman in Phoenix swore you should always start with the longest pins to grab more carpet, but I had a job last week where the long pins kept snagging the pad and leaving ripples. Switched to the medium pins like a guy from the Cleveland crew suggested, and the whole room laid flat in one pass. It was a 20x14 living room with really tight backing, so maybe that's why. Has anyone else had better luck with shorter pins on certain carpets?
