Spent $300 on a premium carpet seaming iron and it burned me twice

Tbh I thought going cheap on tools was always a mistake so I dropped $300 on a top of the line seaming iron. First job with it the temp control glitched and I melted a seam right in the middle of a living room. Had to tear out and redo a whole section cost me a full day and material. Sent it back for warranty but the replacement does the same thing if I run it for more than an hour straight. My old $80 one never gave me a lick of trouble for 6 years. Anyone else had luck with cheaper irons that actually hold up?

My $80 Roberts iron lasted 8 years before I finally gave in and bought a fancy one. Now Im sitting here wishing I had just bought another Roberts instead of trying to fix what wasn't broken.

Call it a seaming iron not a carpet iron.
