PSA: My kicker was biting into the tackstrip for 3 weeks straight and it took a homeowner's dog to show me
So about 3 weeks back I'm finishing up a berber stretch in a rental off 5th street and the homeowner's lab keeps sniffing at this one corner by the door. I shoo him off, pack my truck, get paid, and don't think about it. Two days later she calls me saying the carpet is popping loose right there when her kid runs through. I go back, pull the edge up, and the tackstrip is chewed to hell, the pins are bent flat. Turns out my kicker head had a worn jaw and I was hitting the strip sideways instead of driving the carpet down into it the whole time, not just that job. I'd been blaming the berber for being stiff and padding the estimate with extra stretch, when really my tool was the problem. So here's the debate: do you replace your kicker the second it starts feeling off, or do you baby it and finish out the week because a good one runs $80 and money is tight? Half the guys I know say tools are the job and you eat the cost same day, other half says a worn kicker still beats a new one you gotta break in. Where do you land on that?
