Patterned carpet seams: eyeball or measure? My buddy and I disagree. What's your take?

Seriously, ALWAYS measure because eyeballing it just sets you up for a total headache later.

Watch a small mistake pile up fast. Mix up inches and centimeters once and your whole bookshelf project is off. Next thing you know, every picture frame you try to hang after that is crooked because the wall layout is based on that first wrong mark. You end up wasting a whole Saturday fixing a chain reaction you started by not grabbing the tape measure.

Totally get what ray_owens53 means about a small mistake piling up. I tried to eyeball a patterned runner in my hallway once and the repeat was off by like half an inch. It looked fine for the first few feet, but by the time I got to the end, the pattern was totally out of sync. I had to pull up a whole section and redo it. Now I measure every single seam and mark the pattern with chalk before I even think about cutting.
