Old timer's advice about stretch marks saved me a callback

Guy I sub for sometimes, Don, told me to always check the padding for wrinkles before stretching the carpet. I thought he was just being fussy. Last week I did a bedroom in Clifton and skipped that step. Carpet looked fine when I left. Customer called two days later saying there were ripples showing up. Went back and sure enough, the pad had a crease underneath. Lifted the carpet, smoothed the pad, re-stretched, done. Took an extra half hour. Now I check every room before I even roll out the carpet. Anyone else ever get burned by a bad pad underneath?

Moisture from the tack strip can make the pad swell in spots even if it looks flat when you lay it. I had one where the pad looked perfect but there was a low spot from a floor joist and the carpet rippled right over it a week later. Now I run my knee across the whole pad before stretching, feel for any soft or wavy spots. Saves a callback every time.
