New house re-carpet at 11 Fremont showed me how much my knee technique matters
Honestly, I pulled up the old pad at 11 Fremont and the difference between my seams from 5 years ago vs now is night and day. Back then I was rushing through cuts with a dull knife, now I take the extra 20 seconds per seam to tuck and trim clean. The homeowner noticed the hallway transition before I even pointed it out, which never happened before. Has anyone else looked at their older work and seen how much time changed their finish?

That line about taking the extra 20 seconds per seam really hit home for me. I did a job last month where I kept thinking about how I used to slam through carpet like it was a race. Now I catch myself smoothing the backing twice before I even make the cut, and my knees are screaming less too, which is a bonus. Funny thing is, my old foreman used to say the same thing about drywall mud, not carpet, but the idea stuck with me: slow is smooth and smooth is fast. I actually went back to a house I did three years ago to fix a loose tack strip, and I could tell exactly which corners I rushed because the pattern on the seams was sloppy. It's wild how your hands remember the lazy days even when your brain forgot them. Do you ever find yourself redoing a part of the job just because you know you can do it cleaner now?
