It finally clicked why I hated seaming with a hot iron versus a carpet iron.

I used a hot iron on a busy patterned carpet for 3 years until a job last month with a tight loop Berber taught me the hard way that it melts the backing, and my seams started popping before the homeowner even paid me, so has anyone else ditched the hot iron for good?

Man that Berber job really woke you up. I had a similar thing happen with a nylon cut pile years ago and the hot iron just flattened the yarns permanently. Now I only use the carpet iron for everything. The heat is more even and you dont have to press as hard which saves the backing. Plus the weight of the carpet iron does the work for you once you get the hang of it. Makes seaming a lot less stressful honestly.

Learned that lesson the hard way too... still got the singed seam tape to prove it.

Three Berber jobs and zero melted seams here, @wright.taylor.
