I finally stopped steaming seams after 14 years of doing it on every single job

I used to steam every seam on every install, no matter what. Then last month I did a 1200 sq ft job in Amarillo with this cheap poly backing and the seams looked worse after steaming than before. My old boss Dale always said steam hides sins but it also wakes up cheap backing. Now I only steam when the carpet actually needs it. Has anyone else run into this with the newer budget stuff?
