Figured out stretch ratios the hard way after 8 years in the game

Was reading a Carpet Layers mag last week and saw that nylon carpet needs a 1% stretch ratio while polyester needs 1.5%. Never once checked that in 8 years of installs. Anyone actually measure this stuff or just eyeball it like me?

Eyeball guy here. My tape measure has dust on it.

Eyeball guys keep this trade honest honestly. In my experience the tape measure crowd can get so hung up on perfect numbers they miss the obvious stuff that jumps out visually. Your dusty tape measure means you're trusting your gut on layout and that usually saves time if you know what you're doing. The real trick is knowing when to eyeball it and when to actually measure, because some tolerances just don't forgive guessing. It's the balance between speed and quality that separates the good jobs from the hack jobs, you know?
