Vent: my miter saw station build took 3 weekends instead of 1, all because of one bowed 2x4
I built a 8 foot miter saw station for my garage in Greensboro and figured it was a one weekend job. The whole thing stalled out for 3 weekends because one pressure treated 2x4 in the base was bowed about 3/8 of an inch and I did not catch it until after I had already screwed down the plywood top. I kept trying to shim it and chase the flat with a 4 foot level, and the top would just rock back and forth. I finally tore the frame apart, swapped that one board, and the whole thing squared up in 20 minutes. Now I check every stick with a string line before it goes in a base, does anybody else do that or am I being too picky?
I have spent more time than I care to admit shimming a board that turned out to be junk. My last build I bought 12 studs and 4 of them looked like bananas, so now I just stand them on end at the store and eyeball them first. My wife thinks I am weird for checking wood for ten minutes but she did not have to fight a rocking top for two weekends either.
