The stud finder lied to me at a Reno job in Boise

I was hanging cabinets in a 1970s house last month and my stud finder kept beeping on a spot that felt hollow. Turns out the drywall was glued over old paneling and the studs were 19.2 inches apart, not 16. So I drilled a tiny hole and used a bent wire to find the edge. Anyone else run into weird spacing in older builds, or is it just Idaho luck? lol

And that bent wire trick is honestly the only reliable method I've found for old builds, the stud finders just get confused by all the layers. The 19.2 spacing is a real thing too, it's a commercial standard that some builders used in the 70s to save wood, and it throws off every pre-drilled cabinet bracket you try to use. I've also seen houses where they just nailed furring strips over brick and called it a day, so the "stud" you find might only be an inch deep. Once you hit one of those you learn to knock on the wall and trust your ear more than the gadget, haha.
