The old timer at the lumber yard who told me to stop fighting the grain finally made it click
I was at Homedale Lumber last Thursday wrestling a warped piece of pine and he just grabbed my saw and showed me one cut with the grain running downhill, and I haven't fought a board since, has anyone else had a random stranger teach them a trick that stuck?

Oh man, that's exactly how it goes sometimes. I had a guy at a flea market show me how to sharpen a chisel with a leather strap and some compound, and I swear I cut smoother in five minutes than I had in years. Those little moments from random folks stick with you way more than any YouTube tutorial.

Oh, I gotta push back a little here. YouTube tutorials are way more consistent and save you from all the trial and error of random advice from a stranger who might not know what they're talking about. Plus, you can rewind and pause a video a hundred times, which you can't do with a flea market guy who wanders off after five minutes.

I once spent a whole afternoon with a guy named Earl at a gas station parking lot who showed me how to fix a lawnmower carburetor with a paperclip and a piece of gum wrapper. I was so proud I told everyone about it for a week, then the mower died again two days later. Turns out Earl might have been just as confused as I was, but I still learned more from that sweaty awkward hour than from a dozen how-to videos. YouTube is great and all, but you can't get that kind of raw confidence from a screen, you know? Have you ever gotten bad advice that somehow still worked out?
