Talking to a stair guy from 1972 made me rethink my tape measure

I was on a remodel over in Tacoma and this older fella, Gene, stopped by to check the railing. He said he's been doing stairs for 51 years and never once used a laser level, just a chalk line and a 6 foot folding rule. That got me thinking about how much time I waste setting up digital gadgets when my eyes and a straight edge do the same job in half the time. Has anyone else gone back to older methods after watching a seasoned pro work?
