Serious question, my recycled barn wood shelf started oozing sap after I finished it
I grabbed some old barn boards for a simple shelf to be more sustainable. After sanding and sealing, it looked great until warm weather hit and sticky sap leaked all over the books. Now my eco-friendly project has glued a paperback to the wall. Do all reclaimed woods have this much personality?

Ugh, been there with an old pine table. That sap is sneaky and heat really brings it out. What finally worked for me was hitting the whole piece with a heat gun to draw more sap out, wiping it down with rubbing alcohol, and then resealing it with a shellac based primer before my top coat. It's a whole extra step but it basically traps the sap for good.

Sounds like your shelf is trying to go back to being a tree. At least the paperback got a permanent spot now, right? What's next, is it going to start growing leaves?
