Overheard a contractor say something that's been bugging me all week

Was grabbing coffee in Portland and heard a guy tell his apprentice to skip the pilot holes on some oak trim, saying 'it'll be fine, just run it through.' I mean, oak splits like crazy if you don't pre-drill, and he's gonna have a pile of cracked boards by Friday. Has anyone else run into this kind of shortcut advice from older guys, and how do you call it out without starting a fight?

Wait until Friday and see if he's still laughing when that oak splits mid-install. If it works out, he looks like a genius, and if not, you get to say 'told you so' with free coffee on the line.
