Old timer in Portland convinced me to stop using glue on stair treads
For years I always glued down my stair treads along with nailing them. Thought it was the only way to keep them from squeaking. Then I met this older carpenter named Don at a lumberyard in Portland who told me I was making more work for myself. He said the glue actually prevents the wood from moving naturally with humidity changes. I argued with him for a good 10 minutes before he offered to buy me a coffee and show me his method. He just uses construction adhesive only on the back edge and relies on the nails for the rest. Tried it on a set of stairs last month and not a single squeak so far. Plus it saved me an hour of cleanup since I wasn't wiping glue squeeze out. Has anyone else gotten by with less glue on treads?

Doesn't that kinda apply to a lot of stuff in life though? People always think more is better, like with caulking or paint or even just how much you need to do something. Most of the time the simplest way is actually the right way.
