My planing project went haywire thanks to a hidden knot
The wood piece launched like a rocket and landed in my neighbor's yard!

Hidden knots in wood are the worst for throwing off a planer. That kind of hidden flaw messes things up in all sorts of areas, not just woodworking. It's like a small tear in a bag that splits open when you least expect it. Life is full of these little weak spots that only show themselves under stress. You see it with old wires causing a short or a single bad part breaking a whole machine. It just proves how a tiny, unseen thing can wreck your whole day without warning.

Hidden flaws aren't always a disaster, @gavinp44. They can turn into interesting features or teach us to handle surprises better.

Yeah, that "single bad part breaking a whole machine" feeling is the worst. I get what @lily_black44 is saying about surprises, but a knot launching wood into the next yard is pure chaos, not a happy accident. It's just a total project stop.
